Harry Edward Styles (born 1 February 1994) is an English singer. Known for his influence in popular culture, showmanship, artistry, and philanthropy, he is a subject of widespread public interest with a vast fanbase. Styles is considered to be among the most successful solo artists who have emerged from a boy band.

Styles' musical career began in 2010 as part of One Direction, a boy band formed on the British music competition series The X Factor after each member of the band had been eliminated from the solo contest. They became one of the best-selling boy bands of all time before going on an indefinite hiatus in 2016.

Styles released his self-titled debut solo album through Erskine and Columbia Records in 2017. It debuted at number one in the UK and the US and was one of the world's top-ten best-selling albums of the year, while its lead single, "Sign of the Times," topped the UK Singles Chart. His second album, Fine Line (2019), debuted atop the US Billboard 200 with the biggest ever first-week sales by an English male artist, with Rolling Stone including it in their 2020 revision of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Its fourth single, "Watermelon Sugar," topped the US Billboard Hot 100. Styles' widely acclaimed third album, Harry's House (2022), broke several records and won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year 2023. It was included in the 2023 revision of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. The lead single, "As It Was," became the number-one song of 2022 globally, according to Billboard.

Styles has received various accolades, including six Brit Awards, three Grammy Awards, two Ivor Novello Awards, three American Music Awards, and four MTV Video Music Awards. His film roles include Dunkirk (2017), Eternals (2021), Don't Worry Darling (2022), and My Policeman (2022). Aside from music and acting, Styles is known for his flamboyant fashion. He was the first man to appear solo on the cover of Vogue (2020).

Early Life

Harry Styles was born in Redditch, Worcestershire, England to parents Desmond Styles and Anne Cox.[1] As a child, Harry loved singing and was heavily influenced by iconic artists such as Elvis Presley and The Rolling Stones. After Anne's divorce with Des when Harry was just seven, she married Robin Twist, Harry's step-dad, who already had two children, Mike and Amy.

Growing up, Harry lived in Holmes Chapel, Cheshire, England and attended Holmes Chapel Comprehensive School. Harry mentioned in his 2010 X Factor audition that he planned to study law, and, in a 2015 interview, again commented that he would've studied to be a lawyer if music hadn't worked out. In a 2016 feature article for AnOther Man Magazine, Harry's sister, Gemma, revealed he also considered a career in physiotherapy.

Musical Career

Early Beginnings

Harry was the lead singer for the band White Eskimo with members Hayden Morris (lead guitarist), Nick Clough (bass guitarist), and Will Sweeny (drummer).[2] They competed in a local Battle of the Bands competition and won. This helped Harry realise his passion for performing.

The X Factor

Following a suggestion from his mother, on 11 April 2010, Styles auditioned as a solo contestant for the seventh series of the British televised singing competition The X Factor, singing a rendition of Train's "Hey, Soul Sister." After Simon Cowell suggested that the track was not right for him, he instead sang a rendition of Stevie Wonder's "Isn't She Lovely." He advanced to bootcamp but failed to progress further. Four others in his age group who were also eliminated were put together to form a boy band in July 2010 to compete in the "Groups" category, mentored by Cowell. The group consisting of Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik. Styles suggested the name One Direction. They began to gain considerable popularity in the UK, and within the first four weeks of the live X Factor shows, were Cowell's last, and most popular act in the competition. The group reached the final of The X Factor and finished in third place.

In January 2011, One Direction signed a recording contract with Cowell's now-defunct label Syco Records. Their UK number one debut single, "What Makes You Beautiful," and their debut studio album, Up All Night, were released in September 2011. The album, containing three songs co-written by Styles, debuted at number one in the United States. Their four following studio albums—Take Me Home (2012), Midnight Memories (2013), Four (2014) and Made in the A.M. (2015) — all debuted at number one in the UK. Midnight Memories was the world's best-selling album of 2013, and its accompanying Where We Are Tour was the highest-grossing tour of 2014. After the release of Four, One Direction became the only group in the 58-year history of the Billboard 200 albums chart to have their first four albums debut at number one. The albums spawned a string of successful singles, including "Live While We're Young," "Little Things," "Best Song Ever," "Story of My Life," "Drag Me Down" and "History."

Not wanting to "exhaust" the fan base, upon Styles' suggestion, One Direction went on an indefinite hiatus as of 2016, after completing promotional activities related to Made in the A.M. Since their debut, One Direction have sold 70 million records worldwide, including 7.6 million albums and 26 million singles in the US, becoming one of the best-selling boy bands of all time. The group amassed numerous accolades, including seven Brit Awards, seven American Music Awards, six Billboard Music Awards, and four MTV Video Music Awards. While Styles has been generally positive about his time in One Direction, he has revealed that the hyper-visibility he experienced while being in the band was not always easy to deal with. Styles attributed his avoidance of social media to past pressure that he should be constantly accessible online. He has spoken about being scared of saying the wrong things in interviews and of fear that not answering invasive questions would cause journalists to leave the interview annoyed with him. His contracts with One Direction contained "cleanliness clauses" which stated that the group would be "null and void" if he did not obey them. He expressed that he "burst into tears" when he signed a solo contract without these clauses because he felt "free."

Songwriting

In a May 2016 interview, Snow Patrol singer Johnny McDaid revealed he'd written many songs with Harry over the years[3]. In 2014, Harry co-wrote numerous songs with pop singer Meghan Trainor[4], X Factor winners Alex and Sierra, and rock band Kodaline[5]. He also wrote a song titled "Just A Little Bit Of Your Heart", which was given to American singer Ariana Grande, for her album My Everything[6]. Grande performed the song with Coldplay's Chris Martin at the 2015 Global Citizen Festival. In 2016, one of the songs Harry wrote with Trainor was given to jazz singer Michael Bublè, for his album Nobody But Me.

Solo Career

2016

Shortly after One Direction's hiatus began, Harry cut ties with the band's former management team Modest! Management, signed with public relations management team DawBell, and hired longtime friend Jeff Azoff, son of music mogul Irving Azoff, to be his manager. Harry began working on his debut solo album that February.

Styles launched his own record label, Erskine Records, that May and signed a recording contract with Columbia Records as a solo artist in June. Recording for Styles debut album took place throughout 2016 in Los Angeles, London, and Port Antonio, Jamaica, where Styles and his collaborators had a two-month writing retreat. Jeff Bhasker executive produced the album, and Alex Salibian, Tyler Johnson, and Kid Harpoon served as producers.

Styles halted production temporarily after winning a lead role in Christopher Nolan's 2017 war film Dunkirk. The film was a box office success and would go on to receive several Academy Awards. Harry received public and critical acclaim for his role. In September, Harry released three special editions of Another Man Magazine, curated by himself and featuring several photoshoots showcasing a new hairstyle, interviews and feature articles about his life and career. Album production restarted in July and concluded by December. Harry reunited briefly with his One Direction bandmates in December 2016 for The X Factor UK's season final episode, to support Louis Tomlinson's debut live solo performance just days after his mother's untimely death.

2017

Columbia Records CEO Rob Stringer confirmed Harry's debut album would be released in early 2017, stating: "We have a record we're incredibly excited about and it’s not far away from being ready. We obviously want everything to be beautifully done because we think he's here to stay. Harry has stepped up with the vision of someone who's authentic."[7] On 25 March 2017, a television advert featuring Harry exiting a dark room aired on television in the UK, confirming an upcoming single premiere date.[8] On 7 April 2017, Harry's debut single "Sign Of The Times" was released worldwide. It was a critical and commercial success and would appear on many Best of 2017 lists. Two more singles, "Two Ghosts" and "Kiwi" were released, to lesser success. In a first for the series, Harry appeared on The Late Late Show With James Corden every night for a week that May, where he contributed to skits, hosted the opening monologue, performed songs from his album, and participated in his first solo Carpool Karaoke. Harry released his self-titled debut album Harry Styles worldwide on 12 May 2017. It was a global success, debuting at #1 in many countries. Harry began a small venue world tour entitled Harry Styles: Live On Tour in September 2017.

2018

A larger arena world tour began in early 2018, concluding in July. Harry served as the face of high fashion brand Gucci's 2018 campaign. Styles made his film debut in Christopher Nolan's war film Dunkirk, in July 2017 playing a British soldier named Alex who is a part of the Dunkirk evacuation in World War II. He appeared alongside an ensemble cast which included Fionn Whitehead, Tom Glynn-Carney, Jack Lowden, Kenneth Branagh, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance, and Tom Hardy. Styles beat out more than one hundred other candidates auditioning for the part; Nolan later stated he was unaware of the extent of his fame and that Styles was cast "because he fit the part wonderfully and truly earned a seat at the table." The Daily Telegraph film critic, Robbie Collin, praised Styles for his "bright, convicted, and unexpectedly not-at-all-jarring performance."

In November, BBC One broadcast Harry Styles at the BBC, a one-hour television special presented by Nick Grimshaw. Styles guest-hosted The Late Late Show with James Corden in December.

2019

Harry debuted "Adore You" on the Graham Norton Show on December 7. He also hosted The Late Late Show, his third time hosting. A 45-minute interview with Zane Lowe was uploaded to his YouTube channel, where Harry spoke in-depth about One Direction, his ex-girlfriend, his state of mind and his musical vision. "Fine Line" debuted at #1 in the United States, becoming the third best selling album of 2019. Harry performed the entirety of the album at The Forum on the release date and was again joined on stage by Stevie Nicks. Harry performed a BBC Live Lounge set, where he covered "Juice" by American artist Lizzo. She later responded by covering "Adore You". He performed his album a second time at Electric Ballroom in London on December 19, where he was joined by UK rapper Stormzy. The two were in a battle for the UK #1 album and their performance quashed any rumor of a feud. Harry passionately sang along to one of Stormzy's anti-government songs which drew minor controversy. The set was eventually uploaded to Harry's official YouTube page on April 16, 2020. Harry ended the decade and year by earning the #1 spot on Billboard's Top 200 albums.

2020

Fine Line's promotio continued into early 2020 with Harry peforming "Falling" at the 2020 Brit Awards. He performed a concert set for the US Today Show in the US and a Tiny Desk concert which premiered on March 16. On February 28, Harry premiered the music video for Falling, which depicts him drowning while playing the piano. On February 28, Harry performed a set at SiriusXM's Secret Session concert. On February 29, Harry played another secret set for iHeartRadio, and Fine Line surpassed 1 billion streams on Spotify. On March 3, Harry revealed during an interview with Howard Stern that he had been robbed at knife point on February 14 by a group of men. The men took money and were instructing Harry to unlock his phone when two cars drove past. Harry seized the opportunity to run toward the cars and was able to escape. He filed a police report and the media falsely reported only one person had robbed him. Adore You was certified gold in the UK on March 14. Creative magazine Beauty Papers released a special March issue featuring an elaborate photo shoot with Harry. The shoot saw Harry experiment with drag, gender non-conforming outfits/makeup, and nudity. Harry donated to Live Nation's Global Relief Fund to help support live music crews who lost jobs as a result of COVID-19. Adore You and Watermelon Sugar performed strongly on the US charts, with the latter becoming his first ever US #1 single in August. These singles were also viral hits on video app Tik Tok during the pandemic. Golden was released as the fourth single in October and featured a music video shot on location in Italy. In November, the Grammy Awards nominated Fine Line for Best Pop Vocal Album, Watermelon Sugar for Best Pop Solo Performance and Adore You for Best Music Video. Watermelon Sugar won for its category, making Harry the first member of One Direction to become a Grammy winner. In the same month, Harry became the first man to appear on the cover of Vogue magazine. Harry primarily wore women's clothing for the photo shoot, which attracted considerable media attention and discussion.

2021

In 2021, Harry was cast in the film "Don't Worry Darling" after Shia LeBouf pulled out due to scheduling conflicts. He was also cast in "My Policeman", an LGBT romance drama. Harry restarted Love On Tour in September, beginning in the US. At the 2021 Ivor Novello Awards, "Adore You" won the award for Most Performed Work. Styles was revealed as Eros/Starfox, brother of Thanos, in a mid-credits scene of the Marvel superhero film Eternals, released in November 2021. He launched a skin and nail care brand, Pleasing, that same month.

2022

Harry released his third album, Harry's House, on May 22. Its lead single, "As It Was," debuted atop the UK and US charts, becoming his second solo number one single in both countries. In the US, it became the fourth longest running number one in history, at 15 weeks. The album also debuted at number one in both the UK and US. With four tracks from the album charting within the US top 10, he became the first British solo artist to achieve this feat. Styles headlined Coachella Festival in April, performing to over 100,000 people. Harry's House was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize. "As It Was" became the number one song of 2022 globally, according to Billboard. The album won Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album at the 65th Grammy Awards, and British Album of the Year at the 43rd Brit Awards. Rolling Stone ranked Harry's House at number 491 on its 2023 revision of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" list.

Styles auditioned for the role of Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann's musical biopic Elvis. Luhrmann stated that while "Harry is a really talented actor, the real issue with Harry is, he's Harry Styles. He's already an icon." Don't Worry Darling was released, directed by Styles girlfriend at the time, Olivia Wilde. The film, as well as his performance, received mixed reviews, and considerable controversy surrounded Styles and Wilde's alleged poor treatment of their co-stars, Florence Pugh and Chris Pine. Styles also starred alongside David Dawson and Emma Corrin in My Policeman. The film's main cast members were awarded the TIFF Tribute Award for Performance. Critics were again divided on the film and Styles's performance.

In August and September 2022, as part of Love On Tour, Styles performed 15 sold-out shows at Madison Square Garden; to mark the achievement, a permanent banner was raised inside the venue. Styles became the third musical artist in history to have a banner raised at Madison Square Garden. In November 2022, Styles collaborated with Alessandro Michele on a Gucci collection titled "Gucci Ha Ha Ha".

2023

Love On Tour concluded in July 2023 as the then fifth-highest-grossing tour of all time, earning $617.3 million.

2024

In July 2024, Styles joined Stevie Nicks on stage at the British Summer Time festival in London to perform "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" and "Landslide" in tribute of Christine McVie's birthday. In 2024, Styles invested in a minority stake in emerging British fashion label S.S. Daley.

2025

In late December 2025, Styles shared a video to his YouTube channel entitled "Forever, Forever". The eight-and-a-half minute video depicted the final night of Love On Tour at RCF Arena Campovolo in Reggio Emilia circa July 2023. It also showed footage of the final song performed that evening, which was an untitled ambient instrumental composition that featured Styles on piano. The video ended with the words "we belong together" appearing on the screen.

2026

On 12 January 2026, posters displaying that same phrase were discovered in various cities globally. These posters directed individuals to a website, which subsequently redirected them to a WhatsApp group. Two days later, a voice memo of Styles mumbling "we belong together" was sent to fans through text. On 15 January 2026, Styles announced his fourth studio album, entitled Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally. The album was released on 6 March 2026. The lead single, "Aperture", was announced on 20 January and released on 23 January. Personal Life

Family

Harry's parents are Anne Twist and Desmond Styles. Anne and Desmond are divorced, and Anne remarried to Robin Twist. Harry has one older sister, Gemma, who is a published author and podcast host. His family owned a cat named Dusty and Gemma owns a cat named Olivia. Harry has three cousins, Matt, Ella and Ben Selley. In June 2017, Robin Twist passed away after a battle with cancer at age 57 in 2017.

Public Image

Regarding Styles' time in One Direction, AllMusic writer Tim Sendra opined his "charming persona and elastic vocals had him positioned as the Timberlake of the group." Styles seemed "a dimpled, rakish prankster happy to wear the mantle of Class Clown... maybe because he knew that Most Likely to Succeed belonged to him too," said Entertainment Weekly's Leah Greenblatt. During public appearances, Styles' fashion evolution has traded "teen-friendly" Jack Wills tracksuits for a selection of Saint Laurent, Burberry and Gucci, appearing in a number of campaigns for the latter.

As his time in the band progressed, the singer started wearing skinny jeans and boots. For Billboard's Chris Payne, "From his influences to his fashion to his onstage persona to his (formerly) flowing locks, Styles' vibe has always screamed rock star." The same publication noted over the course of his five-year stint with the group, Styles' taste in fashion "has blossomed from a teen wearing purple Jack Wills hoodies to a carefully executed blend of '70s rock with a glamorous magpie feel." In September 2016, Styles appeared on the cover of Another Man magazine, prompting an editor from The Guardian to label the lack of shirtlessness and the focus on fashion for a niche publication as the death of a "heartthrob" and birth of an "artthrob". During his debut solo album promotions in 2017, Styles opted for "candyfloss" pink suits, printed satin flares, gradually heightening heels, a style described as "flamboyant look". Regarding his favoritism for pink, he quoted The Clash's Paul Simonon in an interview: "Pink is the only true rock & roll color."[3] According to fashion designer Michael Kors, "Harry is the modern embodiment of British rocker style: edgy, flamboyant and worn with unapologetic swagger."

He was ranked first and fifth in 2016 and 2017 respectively on British Vogue's "The 50 Fittest Boys". He was voted the "Sexiest Male in Pop" for 2016, 2017, and 2018 in a poll by British radio network Capital. In 2018, Styles was voted fourth by British GQ on their list of "50 best-dressed men". Upon becoming the first man to ever cover Vogue magazine, a pop culture dialogue began as to how representative Harry was, or could be, of gender neutral fashion and whether his image was "queerbaiting" or authentic. His bold fashion choices often attract negativity from conservative public figures, while the teen/young adult demographic idolizes and applauds him. Some feel his pre-existing fame and his mostly neutral statements on sexuality, gives him an advantage to be more adventurous in his image without risking losing fans, whereas out LGBTQ+ artists may struggle to do the same as prominently.

Relationships

Felicity Skinner

Harry dated Felicity Skinner for a year when both were 15 years old. In 2012, Skinner told media she had not contacted Harry since 2010. She described him as "a really good boyfriend, very romantic and, yes, shy." She said the relationship was long-distance and their breakup was a matter of drifting apart.[9]

Caroline Flack

Harry engaged in a shortlived fling with X Factor host Caroline Flack in 2011, when he was 17 and she was 32. The pairing caused controversy because of their fifteen year age gap. They met in 2010 when Harry was a contestant on The X Factor, and Flack was co-host of companion show, The Xtra Factor. Romance rumors grew the following year when it was reported that Harry and Caroline were seen kissing at a 2011 X Factor afterparty. In December 2011, Harry was photographed leaving her London home in the morning. Styles father expressed concerns with the relationship. Although neither confirmed they were together, in January 2012 Harry tweeted the relationship had mutually ended.[10] In May 2015, Flack said of the relationship: "I’m not going to ever apologize for it because there was nothing at the time that was serious or bad and nobody was getting hurt.”[11] Flack took her own life in 2020, aged 40. Styles wore a black ribbon as tribute to her at the 2020 Brit Awards.

Taylor Swift

Harry dated American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift from October 2012 to January 2013. Swift has described the relationship as "fragile" and "full of anxiety and roadblocks" due to ferverish media attention and volatile fan reactions. The two continued seeing each other casually for approximately a year beyond their initial break-up, and remained friendly in the years after.

While many interpreted Swift's single "I Knew You Were Trouble", from her 2012 album "Red", to be about Harry, the song was released as a single while they were still dating. Swift's 2014 album "1989" features two songs she confirmed to be about Harry: "Style" and "Out Of The Woods" and numerous others likely to be about him. Style was released as the third official single from 1989, and became one of the best selling songs of 2015. The title references Harry's surname and Swift holds a paper airplane necklace like the matching pair they wore while together, in the music video. Swift confirmed to Rolling Stone magazine that Out Of The Woods references a December 2012 snowmobile accident she and Harry were in where her "life flashed before [her] eyes". Harry was photographed with bandages on his chin in the immediate aftermath, which is referenced by the lyric "20 stitches in a hospital room". In late 2014, Styles told numerous media outlets he wasn't worried or concerned about Swift's writing about him because he understood that's her (and his) job. In October 2015, One Direction released "Perfect", a song co-written by Harry and Louis, featuring the lyric "If you're looking for someone to write your breakup songs about, baby, I'm perfect", which sparked worldwide speculation as a reference to Swift, who is known for writing songs detailing her relationships.

In a 2017 interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Harry addressed his relationship with Swift for the first time ever. When asked to comment, Styles stated: "She doesn't need me to tell her the songs are great. It's the most amazing unspoken dialogue ever. Certain things don't work out. There's a lot of things that can be right, and it's still wrong. In writing songs about stuff like that, I like tipping a hat to the time together. You're celebrating the fact it was powerful and made you feel something, rather than 'this didn't work out, and that's bad.' And if you run into that person, maybe it's awkward, maybe you have to get drunk, but you shared something. Meeting someone new, sharing those experiences, it's the best shit ever."

Swift's 2023 re-recording of her 1989 album featured previously unreleased tracks pertaining to her relationship with Styles ("Now That We Don't Talk", "Say Don't Go", "Suburban Legends", "Slut" and "Is It Over Now?").

Kendall Jenner

While never outright confirmed, Harry and American model/reality TV star Kendall Jenner briefly dated between 2013 and 2015. Jenner is part of the Kardashian family; her mother, Kris, was married to Robert Kardashian, father of Kim, Khloe and Kourtney. The Kardashian-Jenners are close with the Azoff family, of which Jeff Azoff is Harry's close friend and manager. In 2013, Harry was first asked about their relationship during 1D Day. He responded, “We went to dinner, but I’m not dating her.” The two would be photographed together numerous times over the next three years. In October 2015, Kendall attended one of One Direction's final concerts. In December 2015, Harry's family vacationed with the Jenner-Kardashians and the Azoffs. Photos stolen from the trip showed Harry and Kendall embracing and Kendall sitting on Harry's lap. Paparazzi pictures appeared to show the pair kissing. Khloe Kardashian told press the two were "probably dating", judging by how often they spend time together. Kourtney Kardashian claimed she had never met Harry. Harry attended Kendall's 21st birthday party in November 2016. In 2018, Kendall attended the final show of Harry's world tour and the two attended a Fleetwood Mac concert together.

In December 2019, Harry hosted The Late Late Show and featured Kendall as a guest. She asked him how many songs he'd written about her but he refused to comment. Talk show host Ellen DeGeneres asked Harry to comment on Kendall, which he also refused. Neither have ever directly confirmed a romantic relationship occurred. In March 2021, Kendall’s mother Kris Jenner claimed on The Ellen Show that Kendall and Harry dated.

Camille Rowe

In August 2017, Harry and Camille were photographed at a Fleetwood Mac concert together. Rowe then accompanied Harry on his 2017 world tour. The pair were photographed together by paparazzi and fans numerous times in early 2018. Neither officially confirmed the relationship but on 31 July 2018, UK news tabloid The Sun announced the pair had split. Harry confirmed a song titled "Cherry" from his second album "Fine Line" addresses their break up and features audio of Rowe's voice at the end.

Olivia Wilde

Harry dated actress Olivia Wilde from November 2020 to November 2022. They began dating shortly after Wilde cast Styles in her film Don't Worry Darling. The pairing was subject to intense media and fan scrutiny, with some believing Harry had contributed to Wilde's split from longtime partner Jason Sudeikis, and others speculating the relationship was what led Wilde to cast Harry in her film. Wilde accompanied Styles on many of his Love on Tour dates worldwide. Wilde and Styles split in November 2022.

Taylor Russell

Harry dated American actress Taylor Russell from June 2023 to May 2024.

Zoë Kravitz

In August of 2025 Harry and Lenny Kravitz's Daughter Zoë started dating. In April of 2026 they announced their engagment.

Controversies

2010

In 2015, British singer Ed Sheeran revealed Harry had told him he purposefully leaked a nude photo of himself during his time on The X Factor. Ed told a reporter "Did you know Harry leaked that nude picture himself? He leaked his own picture. I think that’s amazing.” As Harry is underage in the photograph, it is illegal to download or distribute the image anywhere.

2011

Harry's alleged 2011 relationship with Caroline Flack caused considerable controversy because of the 15 year age gap between the two. Harry has never publicly spoken about the relationship while Flack courted minor publicity after releasing a book.

As of 2011, Harry was consistently been framed as a womanizer by the media. He has expressed discomfort with this assumption[12] and Zayn once came to his defense in an interview[13]. In a 2013 interview with GQ, Harry was pushed to reveal how many sexual partners he had. Upon Harry revealing he had slept with two people, the interviewer stated they did not believe him. The harassment caused backlash from fans who did not appreciate reading Harry's discomfort[14]. The magazine criticized fans in response.

Sexuality Speculation (2011- 2017)

From 2011 onward, Harry and bandmate Louis became subject of a conspiracy theory suggesting they are a closeted couple. They began renting an apartment together in September 2011, just before the band's debut single was released. The pair told media in 2011 they'd invented the combined name Larry Stylinson (Louis Tomlinson/Harry Styles) themselves, and Harry told a magazine: "Until I find the perfect girl, I have Louis"[15]. Their mothers often tweeted about how close the pair were, with Louis's mother once referring to Harry as Louis's husband[16]. In October 2011, Louis tweeted "Always in my heart @HarryStyles. Yours sincerely, Louis".[17] The tweet came shortly after Louis was confirmed to be dating Eleanor Calder. Many believed it signified he and Harry had been forcibly closeted. Past boy bands have had closeted gay members who hid their sexuality, for fear of angering heterosexual female fans[18]. Louis's tweet is one of the most retweeted of all time (over 2 million retweets). Neither Harry or Louis have ever addressed the tweet.

In early 2012, rumors of Harry moving out of his house with Louis circulated. Louis stated fans speculating about their relationship had made them too uncomfortable to continue being close friends[19]. Over the next three years, several denials were issued by Louis. In late 2012, Louis tweeted "Larry is the biggest load of bullshit I've ever heard"[20] in response to a fan who refused to believe Louis's relationship with Eleanor was real. From early 2013, Harry and Louis were not seen together outside of work commitments for a year, leading many to believe they had fallen out. In July 2014, however, Harry attended Louis's mother's wedding, along with Niall and Liam. During One Direction's November 2015 album promotion, they began to interact again. Louis stated Zayn's departure from the band brought the four remaining members closer together. Harry was in attendance for Louis's first solo performance on The X Factor, on December 10, 2016, along with Liam and Niall, as a show of support for Louis having lost his mother three days earlier.

Louis wished Harry a happy birthday on Twitter in 2017, his first online interaction toward Harry in four years. In May 2017, Harry was asked during an interview to clarify if his solo single Sweet Creature was about Louis. Harry stated: "People are always going to speculate what songs are about. I don't think I’d ever want to tell someone that they're wrong for feeling how they feel about a song, even when they're not necessarily right. The fun thing with music is you get to write a song that has all you want to say on it and you don’t necessarily have to explain it much further than that. If you really listen to the lyrics, you can work out whether it's about that or not, and I would lean towards no[21]". In June 2017, Louis expressed his condolences to Harry and his family on Twitter, after Harry's stepfather lost his battle with cancer. Throughout his Back To You promotional campaign, Louis stated numerous times that he was proud of Harry's successful venture into acting.

On 12 May 2017, Harry was asked to clarify his sexuality by The Sun reporter Dan Wooton. Harry stated: "I’ve never felt the need to [label my sexuality], really. I don’t feel like it’s something I’ve ever felt like I have to explain about myself.”

On July 22, 2017, Louis criticized the Larry conspiracy, stating: "It created this atmosphere between the two of us where everyone was looking into everything we did. It made everything, I think on both fences, a little bit more unapproachable. I think it shows that it was never anything real, if I can use that word." He criticised it again in 2024 stating "What I realized a few years ago is that there is nothing I can say. There is nothing I can do to stop those who believe in this conspiracy. They are so connected to what they believe that they will not see the truth for what it really is. I'm sure many people look at and find all these little conspiracies that happen in life interesting. I'd be lying if I said it didn't irritate me a little, but that's the nature of the job. There are times when it gets very personal. I have my son, Freddie. He's the most important person in my life. And occasionally, [these theories] end up addressing things that are kind of unfair. That's what we have now. There's nothing I can do about it. Nothing I can say to stop people from inventing what they want to invent. So, so be it."

2011

On August 10 2011, Harry and Louis both tweeted #olive at the exact same minute, 5:03 AM. In urban dictionaries, olive is another way to say you love someone without having to say love, hence leading to many speculations about their intentions behind this tweet.

2013

In July, Harry denied being in a relationship with BBC Radio 1 host Nick Grimshaw, after media speculated why they were spending so much time together. Upon being asked about it, Harry stated "‘Oh, really? I didn’t even know. We’re not dating, no. We’re just friends." The interviewer also asked if he was bisexual and Harry stated "Bisexual? Me? I don’t think so. I’m pretty sure I’m not."[22] Grimshaw also denied in 2015 that he and Harry ever dated.

In December 2013, Harry won a court order against paparazzi, prohibiting them from loitering within 50 meters of his house, placing him under surveillance or pursuing him in vehicles.[23]

2014

In July, a pornographic image of a woman appeared in Harry's favorites on Twitter. The image was left there for over eight hours. When Harry realized the error, he deleted the tweet and favorited numerous pictures of puppies and kittens, before tweeting "Sooooo...the weather?"

During a 2014 concert, Harry danced with an inflatable hammer bearing the Israel flag and symbols, which many found offensive as Israel was conducting brutal attacks against Palestine at the time. Zayn spoke against these attacks on Twitter. On Instagram, Harry took down an image of himself wearing a Native American headdress after receiving accusations of cultural appropriation, meaning trivializing sacred elements of culture and removing them from their proper context.

2015

In July, Harry told a US concert audience "If you like whales, don't go to Sea World", referencing the animal cruelty accusations often aimed at the animal park. Sea World staff responded with a series of inflammatory tweets. Media noted Sea World's reputation further plummeted as a result of Harry's comments and in November, the park announced they would be phasing out their famous Orca show. In late 2015, Heat Magazine made a formal apology for running a story about Styles dating a model, stating the story had been completely fabricated.

In October, One Direction released a song called "Perfect", co-written by Harry and Louis, which featured the lyrics "If you're looking for someone to write your break-up songs about, baby I'm perfect". Many took this to be a reference or dis to ex-girlfriend Taylor Swift, who is known for writing songs about former relationships, and wrote about Harry on her 1989 album. Harry was asked numerous times to explain the lyric but remained vague saying it was down to personal interpretation.

2017

Throughout his debut solo world tour, Harry would often wave various LGBT+ flags during his concerts, usually from fans in the crowd. In October, several fans brought flags and signs in support of race relations social movement Black Lives Matter to numerous concerts, but it was unclear if Harry ever saw or had access to them, as he did not wave any. Fans criticized Harry online for what they believed was him specifically ignoring them or being too afraid to publicly show support for the cause. Harry eventually posted a supportive image to his official Instagram account and went on to wave the flag at several shows in mid 2018, and in 2021.

In March 2018, Harry performed a previously unreleased song titled "Medicine" during his world tour. One lyric in the song appeared to suggest bisexuality: "The boys and the girls are here/I mess around with him/And I’m OK with it", sparking worldwide speculation.

2020

Harry's historical Vogue cover sparked heated discussion, particularly in the US, about the representation of masculinity and gender in modern media. Several right-wing public figures criticised Harry's decision to wear dresses claiming it was a "feminization of men" and a "referendum on masculinity". On the opposite side, some LGBTQ+ discussions suggest Styles receives more praise and recognition for his ambiguous and 'safe' experiments with image than actual LGBTQ+ artists do. Others also expressed distate with his decision to not publicly state his sexuality while exploiting the praise from merely suggesting he may not be straight.

Tattoos

1. The naked mermaid

The boy band star got a half-naked mermaid inked onto his left forearm back in November 2014. When asked about the reason behind the tattoo, Harry simply told The Today Show, "because I am a mermaid".

2. The anchor

Harry's tattoo of a naval anchor is on his left wrist and is a pretty standard design in the world of tattoo lovers, especially among the old-school sailor crowd! It was done to cover up his old "I can't change" tattoo.

3. The skeleton

One of Harry's most unique tattoo designs, this one is on his left tricep and depicts a skeleton man dressed up in a suit and fedora hat.

4. The old-school handshake

The handshake tattoo is a symbol of equality.

5. The butterfly

One of Harry's biggest tattoos, the outstretched wings of the butterfly cover up Harry's torso. Butterflies generally symbolize transformation and change, so perhaps Harry go this to show his evolution from a young boy band star to a real man.

6. The Holy Bible

Featured on Harry's left forearm is an inking of the Holy Bible and, while Harry isn't outwardly religious, probably reminds the boy band of his home. The inking also covers up his old lettering of 'things I can't".

7. The 'A' letter

Done way back in July 2012, a tattoo of the letter 'A' is on his left forearm for his mother, Anne Cox.

8. The ship

One of the One Direction star's most intricate designs is his traditional naval ship on his left bicep. While many fans speculated this was inked about ex-girlfriend Taylor Swift (after the man in her 'I Knew You Were Trouble' video had a very similar design), Harry insists its all about reminding him of traveling homeward when he's off on his trips around the globe.

9. The black heart

Back in December 2012, Harry had this heavy design inked onto his left bicep. Many think it's all about reminding him of his family back home.

10. The birdcage

On the left of Harry's rib cage Harry has another large design of a birdcage. It is possible it could be a reference to Harry always feeling caged in during his time in One Direction.

11. The theatre masks

Another tattoo on Harry's left side is this old-school design of classical theatre masks, showing just how dedicated Harry is to his job of entertaining people.

The letters 'SMCL' have also never been addressed, but fans have suggested it stands for Simon Cowell, the man, the myth, the legend, that put the boys together on X Factor.

12. The swallows

A classical tattoo that, for Harry, represents traveling and being out on the road all the time, but always finding your way home.

13. The laurel leaves

One of Mr. Styles. more risque tattoos are the fern leaf designs on his left and right hips which cannot help but draw attention to the boy band star's pelvis. It's rarely spotted, but in his incredible album artwork shot by Tim Walker, the fern is out in all of its glory.

14. The 'Gemma' tattoo

Back in 2012 Harry had his older sister's name Gemma tattooed in Hebrew onto his shoulder. Another inking in tribute to his family and showing just how close he is to them.

15. The Nails

He's never explained the appearance of three pretty ominous black nails on his arm, but they've been lurking there ever since 2013.

16. The cross

While this is traditionally a religious symbol, he has the pretty small ink in comparison to his others marked on his hand.

16. The 'Brazil!' one

While out in Rio De Janeiro, Harry got this tattoo on his thigh.

17. The tiger

He has a tiger face on his left thigh.

As of May 2025, Harry has 61 known tattoos.
